What will this program do for me?
This is a program designed to provide training for three groups of students:
those who plan to seek employment as firefighters in the public sector, which includes the City, County, State and Federal fire service agencies;
those who are currently employed in the fire protection field who seek technical training to further their careers or to prepare for promotional opportunities; and those who plan to seek private employment in the field.

What kind of job can I get once I complete the program?

Government agency positions include fire investigation, fire suppression, and fire protection engineering. Private employment includes safety instructors, insurance adjusters, fire protection specialists, fire equipment sales representatives, fire-equipment installers, and architectural assistants.

How much can I earn in this career?
There is a wide range depending on your qualifications and where you are employed in California. Each City, County, and Federal agency pays differently. In 1997, the salary range was $25,000 to $70,000. Please refer to the Occupational Outlook Handbook for current information on job prospects and salary scales.

How long will it take?
On average, it takes 2 years to obtain the degree. During this time, instructors regularly circulate employment opportunity notices forwarded to City College of San Francisco. For a listing of specific requirements for the degree, please refer to the Program Curriculum.

Where will classes be held?
Classes are held on the Ocean Campus. Please check the Schedules for Credit Classes for class times and locations.

What time of day are classes offered?
Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm. Night classes are also conducted Tuesday through Thursday from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. For a current listing of class times and locations, please check the Schedules for Credit Classes.

When do classes start?
Fall semester begins the second week of August, Spring semester begins the second week of January, and Summer sessions begin in June. Please refer to Schedules for Credit Classes for important dates.

How do I enroll?
All students who meet the City College admissions policy are eligible to enroll in this degree program. If you are a new student, please fill out an application. You may also contact the Office of Admissions at (415) 239-3285 for more information.

What are the requirements for Associate of Science with an Award of Achievement?
Students who satisfy the requirements for graduation from the College and who complete 18 units of Fire Science, including the five "Core Courses" with a "C" (2.00 grade point average) or higher, will receive the Award of Achievement in Fire Science. For more details, refer to the Program Curriculum.
