 Aircraft Maintenance Technology

What will this program do for me?
There are three options of study available: Aircraft Power-Plant maintenance Technology, Airframe Maintenance Technology, and Avionics-Maintenance Technology. Students can obtain an A.S. Degree or a certificate in these areas.

What kind of job can I get once I complete the program?
Power-Plant Maintenance - Entry-level positions as accessory mechanic, general power-plant mechanic, maintenance crew member, ramp service crew member and hanger crew member. After experience and further training, individuals are eligible for aircraft power-plant tech (licensed) supervisor and inspector positions.
Airframe Maintenance - Entry-positions include general aircraft-overhaul mechanic, accessory mechanic electric-shop mechanic, general cabin equipment mechanic, maintenance crew member, ramp-service crew member and hanger crew member. Journey level positions include airframe technician (licensed), supervisor and inspector.
Avionics Maintenance - Entry-level positions may be avionics technician, radio/electric line mechanic. Journey level positions may include lead systems specialist, supervisor and inspector.

How much can I earn in this career?
Entry-level salary is approximately $30,000 or more per year. The salary range is $30,000 to $60,000 per year. Please refer to Occupational Outlook Handbook for current information on salary and job prospects.

How long will the program take?
The certificate or degree program takes 2 or more years to complete on a full-time basis. Please refer to Program Curriculum for specific requirement information.

Courses are held at the San Francisco Airport at the CCSF Airport Campus. Please check the Schedules for Credit Classes for class times and locations.

What time of day are classes offered?
Courses are offered primarily during daytime hours, but some evening courses are also offered. Daytime classes are from 7:30 am to 1:15 pm, Monday through Friday. Evening classes are 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm, Monday through Thursday. Please check the Schedules for Credit Classes for class times and locations.

When do classes start?
Classes begin in August for the Fall Semester and January for the Spring Semester. Please check the Schedules for Credit Classes for class times and locations.

How do I enroll?
Enrollment is limited; permission to enroll in the program must be obtained from the Aeronautics Department. Contact (415) 239-3901 for more information about enrollment procedures. Students should first apply for admission, followed by taking the placement exam. Students will need to submit a department application and schedule an appointment with the department advisor.

What are the requirements for certification?
Applicants prior to enrolling in the Aircraft Maintenance Technology program 1) complete ESL 82 with a final grade of "C" or higher or receive a CCSF placement of ENGL 92 with a "C" or higher or receive a CCSF placement of ENGL 94 or 2)students enrolled in English classes complete ENGL 92 with a "C" or higher or receive a CCSF placement of ENGL 94 and 3) students complete MATH E, BSMA G, BSMA H, or BSMA J or receive a placement of MATH 840. The Federal Aviation Administration requires the student be able to read, speak, and understand English and perform basic computation. Other requirements include: satisfaction of the math requirement, be a legal resident of California, and have good health, especially good eyesight and good hearing. Students must pass required courses with a minimum score of 70% and meet hourly attendance requirements.
